Background:

One of the biggest barriers to growing food in Wales is access to land.

With allotment waiting lists massively over-subscribed and people right across the country keener than ever to grow their own fruit and veg, Now is the time that this Land sharing project can make a real difference.

With the economy getting worse seemingly everyday, home vegetable gardens are becoming more popular.  Agriculture industry analysts have noticed an increase in gardening related sales.  Agriculture Extension agents nationwide have also reported increased interest in home vegetable gardening.  Interest in vegetable gardening has spiked overall, due to tighter budgets and several other factors.  Food sanitation and safety is another big concern for people as contaminated food imported from other countries sickens thousands of people.

LAND-SHARE

LET`S GROW LAND-SHARE

PROJECT AIMS:

THE CREATION OF A WELSH REGISTER OF SUITABLE CULTIVATING LAND THAT CAN BE SHARED.

The Aim of the project is to Make Welsh land more productive by opening up more parcels of land than ever before. It is to get more people out into the natural fresh air, Get a bit of regular exercise. Grow their own healthier organic crops. Basically contributing to a better lifestyle and a healthier planet.

THE EFFECT:

The desired effect is self-reliance, the production of more ethically grown fresh local organic produce lets make it more accessible and cheaper for all.

Lets help try to take our reliance on supermarkets and global money making food barons out of the equation by giving more families the chance to grow sustainable crops of their own.

It has been estimated that you can grow enough fresh food for a year from a plot just 3 square metres.

We can do this by using modern technology such as the internet to create a data base of much needed Donors, Land owners and then introducing them to Perspective growers, small holders and gardeners.

It is simply a case of GOOD COMMUNICATION of a great idea.

“When I lived in my little 2nd floor flat in the centre of Near Gowerton, Swansea. I yearned for a little piece of dirt on which to grow my own fruit and veg, my kitchen windowsill was crammed with as many herb plant pots as I could fit on it and a chilli plant held residence on the counter top.

If a scheme like Land donor had existed back then, I would have jumped at the chance to register. Instead, I looked out every day on to the huge garden

below that belonged to the ground floor flat and that was utterly unkept by it`s elderly owners - what a waste.

These days I`m lucky enough to finally have my piece of dirt and an imagination  full of ideas as to what to grow and although it`s only in the planning stages, I can`t wait to see what I can acxhieve y next Autumn".

Considerations for Sharing your Backyard Garden

There are no restrictions on how you might choose to share your space - however there are a number of issues that you might want to consider when making arrangements to share your gardening space with another member of your community.

·        Time Considerations

How many hours per week will the garden space be available?

On which days of the week?

What time(s) of the day?

·        Tool Considerations

Do you have tools to share?

Where will they be stored?

·        Soil Considerations

Is there enough soil?

Who will pay for soil amendments?

What types of amendments or additives are acceptable?

·        Seeds / Transplants

Who will provide the seeds and/or transplants?

How will decisions be made about what is grown?

·        Water Considerations

Can the gardener use the hose and water?

Who does the watering?

When?

·        Harvest Considerations

Who will harvest the food?

How will the harvest be distributed?

·        Privacy and Security Considerations

Who can enter the garden? (children, partners, friends, pets)

What space can be used? (shed, basement, bathroom)

What about locks and gates?

Emergency contact numbers?
